Book, short for Bukherazephyleer, is a Neptunian baker and owner of Gweebo's Canteen, a little deli-style hot food joint near the West Dockyards. Book is very sociable, carrying herself with a big-sisterly demeanor, sharing her wisdom freely while having a bit of fun at someone else's expense. She speaks Neptunian, Terran and Martian standard languages with equal clarity, and knows a few choice phrases in Mercurian Tunnelspeak. Book is nice but she's not "kind", getting along well with the Dockyards' assortment of roughnecks and absolutely enforcing her boundaries with the ones who feel inclined to overstep. Being a Neptunian has blessed Book with a set of very sharp claws and she's very happy to demonstrate what she can do with them. To her regulars, the banter is part of her charm. Yipyap gives her five barks out of five.
The main gimmick of Gweebo's Canteen is that it's a perfectly ordinary Neptunian deli shop with a funny, exotic-sounding name. Book serves her regulars happily, but Gweebo's is also located in a convenient spot accessible to newcomers arriving on Titan from commercial flights- it's important to remember not everyone is an ace starship pilot! The majority of folks book flights from one major starport to the next, and those ships arrive at regular intervals at regular docking ports. Book's scheme is somewhat cynical, but she gives her restaurant and her food exotic-sounding names because she knows first-timer arriving on Titan Garden from the Inner Belt- particularly Terrans and Martians for some reason- love to experience strange space food while they're out on vacation or whatever! So they might have sandwiches and sauces at home, but you put something called a "Bywlxrimb" in front of them and, oh gosh, honey, we've just got to try this! To Book's credit, it works. Tourists love Gweebo's Canteen. Their first authentic taste of alien cuisine! Idiots.
When you get past the funny names, Book's cooking is a great example of Zephyleer Neptunian cuisine! The heart of Gweebo's Canteen is the Llambyrgryst, a large, spiraled sandwich loaf filled with meats and vegetables. A Neptunian can use their sharp claws to cut a band of the spiral and take a section for themselves to eat, leaving the rest of the sandwich for their companions to enjoy- it's a great meal for crews and families to share together. Think of a Terran stromboli, but larger and more round. It's not so exotic when you say it like that, but that's the power of marketing. If you want something approaching a salad, ask for the "Xobtasp". A plate of fried Neptunian molerat served with beans and rice is listed under "deluxe Yabble with Rwyblings", and a thick doughy dish approaching the form and flavor of a Chicago-style deep dish can be ordered by requesting the "personal, medium or large Ghaptwyx" with your choice of ingredients. Be sure to wash it down with a can of Fruit Nice!, it's a Titan favorite. Some people might feel like the marketing trick of making familiar-looking dishes sound more alien than they are is a bit mean, but Book doesn't care. And honestly, the tourists don't care that much either, because the food is really good. We're worlds apart but we still cook and eat our food together. Take that understanding back home to Terra with you.
Book is, perhaps unsurprisingly, big into Titan's underground music scene. She is good friends with Min-Jeong and Puke Commander and always comes out for a Pukes show when Gweebo's is closed up for the night. She likes to hire a lot of the local kids, scrappy punks who don't always fit into other facets of the space station, and give them a shot at their first paid gig. When Min-Jeong is strapped for cash she'll occasionally pop in to pull some shifts at Gweebo's, until her attention span drifts or she gets bored and stops showing up- Book plans for this, and when the kids are ready for work again she doesn't hold an abrupt disappearance against them. Neptunian food isn't difficult to make, it's a useful skill to learn and it puts a few credits into the music scene's pockets, which turns into merch sales for the small-time acts Book loves to support. The Garden's E-District keeps the first-time tourists flying in from the Inner Belt and they keep stopping into Gweebo's for a taste of that alien food they heard about on the teevee. The dockyards get fed, the tourists pay into the station, kids get work and local bands sell merch. It's a neat little system Book's got going for herself. If you're ever on Titan, be sure to stop in and say hi! And bring your friends, a Llambyrgryst is a lot for one person to eat.
