Grizzly John is a permanent resident of Titan Garden and an old mentor to the Jackrabbit's captain. He runs the Grizzly Bear Scrapyard, a large facility inside Titan Garden's north gates where he buys, sells and trades scrap materials and old technology. The Grizzly Bear Scrapyard is an important partner to Red Raven Towing & Salvage, as Grizzly John will gladly buy the unusable scraps of shipwreck the crew salvage from a job, or supply obsolete parts Amy might need to get a refurbished piece of recovered hardware in working condition for Scarlet to resell. Grizzly John himself is a very mellow, down-to-earth personality, having made it to the far side of a long and eventful life, he's enjoying the little niche he's built for himself in space. His prosthetic leg has a pneumatic piston in it, which he likes to use to kick open rusted doors or bend in sharp flanges of scrap metal his team sends to the compressor.

Grizzly John is a Martian so he comes from very hardy stock. Martians are distinct from their Inner Belt neighbors in that they have redundant organs and an ability to control their body systems to a greater degree- having a third lung lets them breathe easier in offworld atmospheres, having a second heart lets them work harder for longer without overloading themselves, having a second stomach allows them to break down less-palatable foods and having a segmented liver and extra set of kidneys helps filter toxins from their system. Martians tend to be stocky and broadly-built to contain these internal redundancies; when they need to, they can control their metabolism, trading in some horsepower for longevity, enabling them to go long periods without food. Grizzly John used his gifts to build a career running a long-haul transport vessel, moving vital cargo from world to world in the years before commercial warp drives were safe enough for everyday use. As he could travel further to stranger places on less food and sleep, Grizzly John quickly built a reputation as a shiphand who could get the job done, and when he rose to captaincy of his own vessel, would go on to inspire a new generation of crew from all worlds to harness their talents and take pride in their work.

Many shiphands came and went under Grizzly John's command, but there were two in particular he had a special fondness for. One was Amy, the Mercurian mechanic who he'd hired on as an assistant maintenance crewmember who eventually worked her way up to being the ship's helmsman over the years, and the other was Bryce, a Venusian boy who hired on as a cargo loader but made his way as a clever navigator, finding risky but faster routes through star charts to deliver the ship's cargo ahead of schedule in tandem with their ace helmsman. Grizzly John plucked these troublemakers from their home worlds and gave them their first real jobs, setting them up to captain their own crews when he had made enough of a fortune and decided to retire to Titan Garden. Grizzly John looks out for both of his proteges, giving both Red Raven Towing & Salvage and Timberwolf Reclamation & Demolition good rates on the scrap they salvage. Like an old father he takes care of the loose ends of what to do with hard-to-sell bits of ship salvage and keeps a bit of cash in his kids' pockets. He's a seasoned old man in his sunset years but he's happy to see his legacy carry on- they may squabble amongst themselves, but they do good work, and he likes to think he had a hand in shaping them to be that way.
