Kenji is the captain of the Tardigrade and founder of Salamander Search & Rescue, an emergency service team dispatched from Titan Garden. An Android manufactured by Aoba Lifelike Systems Specialists, Kenji is a seasoned starfarer, having served aboard many types of starships in many different roles in his journey towards captainship of his own vessel. As such, he's very knowledgeable about the layouts and capabilities of a wide breadth of starship makes and models, which comes in very handy when he and his team need to rescue distressed travelers from one of these labyrinthine husks in the weightless depths of space. In addition to being up to speed on starship construction, Kenji is also an accomplished linguist, able to speak a good number of the Sol system's many languages fluently and communicate with starfarers from every port of origin- a perk of being an Android. Overall, Kenji is well-equipped to serve as the captain, coordinator and central point of communications for his team, ensuring everyone who goes out on a call makes it home safely at the end of the day.

Salamander Search & Rescue answers calls to a wide variety of places, so its crew needs to be prepared for anything. Space is an unforgiving place, so a call could come in from a campsite on one of Saturn's uninhabited moons, from underneath the ice on a moon a spaceship landed on, from inside a stardock or a ship adrift in the void. Where Red Raven Towing & Salvage are focused on recovering vehicles, Salamander Search & Rescue are called when people are injured and in distress, and often times the two will arrive at the same call together. As a show of solidarity with his fellow crews Kenji keeps a Rescue Workers patch on the sleeve of his coat, a white flag with an orange stripe representing the hotline starfarers can call whenever they need help. Amy Redraven keeps one on her coat's sleeve as well.

When enlisting help to fill out his crew Kenji sought out other Androids in an effort to make as reliable a crew as possible. The reasoning behind this is twofold: firstly, Androids have an extremely high tolerance to extremely low temperatures, moreso than even the most rugged Callistan, so wherever a distress call may come from Kenji and his team of Androids can safely arrive as quick as possible. Secondly, Androids recover from damage in different ways than their organic peers, where they're able to have damaged parts replaced and recover from injuries sustained on a rescue mission as readily as a Venusian, if at a greater material cost. There are other rescue teams who staff excellent organic crews and they do great work for Titan and the broader Solar community, but Kenji's team share the common trait of synthetic bodies that allows them to fly directly into the jaws of danger to pull a stranded starfarer to safety.

It is Salamander policy to dress warmly when arriving at a cold emergency location. While the Android crew can suffer the cold easily enough, the comfort of the people they are rescuing is paramount. Warm, soft clothing lets the crew interact with a distressed starfarer in more gentle way than their cold exterior paneling alone would allow. Kenji keeps a coat with a big fluffy hood, but he's quite fond of his special captain's hat, which he believes makes him look very professional and inspires confidence in the people his team is rescuing. Warmer hats are available, but sometimes the little details are more important. You worked hard to put this crew together, you deserve a funny little captain's hat. Enjoy it, Kenji. You're doing good work out there.
